It was 3 p.m. Friday and I was curled up on the right corner of the couch. Head pressed against the hard armrest, too tired to get a pillow. Dog pressed against my back, no help at all.

I counted the hours until bed. Could I be asleep by 8 p.m.? Lame. I heard my husband’s key against the door and then the door bumping against the doorstop.

“It’s the weekend!” He hollered. Backpack over his shoulder, hands over his head in celebration. “What do you want to do?”

I opened my eyes, looked at this good-natured, easy-going guy, and felt exhausted. Again. Just like I had every afternoon this month.

Why was I so so tired? I’d spent the day behind a desk finishing assignments and a corporate home page for my writing business. Took the dog out twice. That’s worth about 100 steps. It’s not like I’m doing hard, physical labor. But, I felt like an out-of-shape marathoner.

Was I depressed? I didn’t think so. I was having no trouble getting out of bed in the morning and other than my frustration and fatigue in the afternoon I was feeling good about life. Was it an illness?
